■ Coinciding with our people's celebrations of the glorious Independence Day and the anniversary of the departure of the last hated British soldier from the south of the country on November 30, 1967, and under the generous patronage of Professor Dr. Mohammed Mohammed Al-Haifi, the Rector of Thamar University, and the supervision of Dr. Amin Mohammed Al-Jabr, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, the Media Department at the Faculty organized a cultural and literary seminar this morning entitled, "November 30th Freedom and Independence."

This great anniversary was discussed with the participation of a select group of writers, media professionals and historians, through readings encompassing literary, political, historical and media dimensions. In his address, the University Rector explained that organizing this symposium stems from the university's scientific role and national duty to document Yemeni memory, enhance awareness of the nation's history, and confront attempts to obscure historical facts and distort the paths of the national struggle.

In the political section, Dr. Al-Jabr's paper addressed the Day of Independence and Liberation and the diversity of national political visions at that time, ranging from armed struggle and negotiation to other available options for the national forces at that stage, which converged to achieve the desired dream of liberating South Yemen and building a new future for an independent state that reflects the will of the free and revolutionary people.

As for the historical section, Dr. Bakil Mohammed Al-Kulaibi, the Head of the Media Department at the college, reviewed the historical stages that the Day of Independence and Liberation went through, from the imposition of the oppressive occupation on South Yemen in 1839 until the declaration of independence on November 30, 1967.

In the third section, dedicated to the role of media in the independence revolution, Abdulmajeed Musleh, a lecturer in the Media Department, pointed out in his paper on the role of media in the revolution for freedom and independence that the media was not merely a conduit for news or a means of disseminating political awareness.

Rather, it constituted a powerful driving force, igniting revolutionary national sentiment in the hearts of the revolutionaries and breaking the barrier of fear of repression by the occupying enemy forces among the masses. He also explained how the rudimentary media outlets and professional journalists of that time played a pivotal and leading role as tools for strengthening popular resistance, highlighting the courage of the leaders, thinkers, and liberationists of the free South and reviving influential national slogans in local, Arab, and international public opinion.

The symposium was attended by Professor Dr. Abdulkarim Zabiba, the Vice Rector for Graduate Studies, Dr. Aziz Al-Aqra, the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Fouad Al-Shameri, the Vice Dean for Graduate Studies, Dr. Salah Al-Qawsi, the Vice Dean of the Continuing Education Institute, Dr. Ali Quradha, the Vice Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Essam Wasel, the Head of the Libraries Department, Mr. Jamal Al-Bahri, the Head of the Media and Public Relations Department, and Bandar Al-Harouji, the General Secretary of the College, in addition to a number of faculty and administrative staff members.

At the conclusion of the symposium, the University Rector commended its themes and the efforts made in its preparation. He directed that the halls of the Central Library be made available to host such important symposia, providing an opportunity for the public, students, and researchers from various literary and humanities disciplines to attend and benefit from them.

The attendees enriched the symposium with valuable discussions, which collectively emphasized the importance of preserving national memory, encouraging historical studies, and strengthening the values of unity and national belonging by recalling these historical milestones. This contributes to enhancing societal awareness and building a future based on a firm understanding of Yemen's history and the struggles of its people.
